cookie box hats & more mishmash dress beauties!
june 2018
dearies,
we're halfway through 2018, can you believe it? in a few months time, i will be sending off holiday dress and gift reminders once again!
last month i shared i was invited to a tea party to celebrate the royal wedding of megan markle and prince harry. if you follow me on instagram, you may remember seeing my posts on creating my own fancy hat to wear. it started with the humblest of beginnings, an empty macaroon cookie box! using a few stems of flowers purchased at the local dollar store, remnant fabric and netting i had on hand, box tape, a trusty sewing needle and lots of thread, a fantastical creation emerged:
while i could have hastened the process by using a glue gun for the assembly, there is something terribly satisfying in having fingertips ache from handwork, as well as in knowing every component was secured in place. i also appreciate how the finished chapeaux conveys that even if we come from humble beginnings, with a little inspiration, ingenuity, perseverance (and clear packing tape!) we can achieve greatness!
the tea party itself was marvelous. twenty of us gathered together to sip tea, eat scones and sweets, and have our picture taken with the couple of the hour. one party guest (below, far right, in the white hat) shared she was going to a pajama party very early the next morning to watch the wedding itself and she planned to wear her big fancy tea hat along with her pajamas.
i'm pleased to say that my two most recent mishmash dresses are completed and already off to their respective admired recipients! "end of story" combined burgundy and plum batiks, a purple calico, and included a pink vintage floral and purple 3d print fabric which both date somewhere between 1975 to 2003! meanwhile, "original you," mingled a splash of multiple bold and subtle pink batiks, and was accented with a purple zipper and both light and dark pink ribbon trim.
i'm thrilled to be celebrating my 47th birthday on the 19th of june! we all know people who shun any mention of their birthdays or lament and bemoan the passing of time. as for myself, i enjoy each milestone to the fullest and resolve to keep a positive perspective. as the old irish proverb goes, "do not resent growing older. many are denied...the privilege."
until my next missive...
xoxo
