the dearie daughters love to partake in our annual family holiday traditions, including the arrival of our house elf, ellie. she always, like clockwork and without fail, arrives the day after thanksgiving. where we'll find her hanging out each morning until christmas, we never know!

as the end of 2018 quickly approaches, it also means it's time to gear up for new years eve parties and celebrations. whether you're staying in or hosting your own soiree, i encourage you to try one of my favorite winter libations, compliments of the marvelous mixologist, mr. dearie! fully detailed instructions with step-by-step photos can be found here.

mr. dearie's recipe makes one serving of this classic, spicy hot cocktail, although it can easily be doubled with excellent results. also, it's imperative that you only use real butter (not margarine) for optimal results!

mr. dearie's hot buttered rums

1.75 oz. spiced dark rum
6 oz. hot water
1 thin slice of unsalted butter
1 tablespoon of dark brown sugar (light will do)
a pinch of ground cinnamon
a pinch of ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 star anise pod (optional, mr. dearie indulges me because i love them so)

place butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla extract into a heavy glass or crystal tumbler (heck, even a coffee mug will do). using a metal spoon, blend the ingredients until creamy. add boiling hot water, poured over your metal spoon and stir. add the rum and stir again. if desired, garnish with a star anise pod. cheers and enjoy! most delicious, right? mr. dearie says, "you are welcome."
