door to morocco & october is slow-fashion month!
september 2017
dearies,
i'm thrilled to welcome my newest subscribers to my monthly missives! whether you are newly signed up or have been following since the beginning, each and every one of you mean so much to me and i truly appreciate your continued support. thank you!
last month i'd promised to share the completion of our moroccan front entry door i'd designed and devised.
want to see a more? take a look at the step-by-step process from inspiration to completion. i'm happy to report that the end result has surpassed my expectations and is absolutely epic! i must share a funny anecdote: my mum popped by right after the door's completion to see our eldest daughter's new haircut. however, my mum was so distracted and mesmerized by our beautiful new doorway, she left, completely forgetting the reason for her visit!
did you know that october is slow-fashion month? i've written about slow-fashion in the past and have a page devoted to it on my website. unfortunately, fast-fashion has an additional price that we rarely consider - its negative impact on our environment. you can learn more here, here, and here. and please don't deceive yourself, while these articles call out cheap and trendy high-street shops like forever 21, h&m and zara, larger upscale stores and mail-order brands (including nordstrom, anthro, neimans, and alas, even my beloved boden...) are just as culpable, albeit at a higher price point.
the majority of fashion designers, (and ironically, many slow-fashion designers) regularly offer seasonal product collections. meaning, every spring and fall (and often, resort & holiday wear inbetween) they are designing and creating new collections of clothes, regardless of whether their previous collections were sold or not. i am proud that darling dearie offers stable collections that transcend seasons. classic, flattering design and versatility with your existing wardrobe means your one-of-a-kind item is the perfect capsule wardrobe addition. if you are not sure of how to style your dress or flag pants or you are looking for styling inspiration, please visit my "versatile" page. my dresses were intentionally designed to layer well with other basics in your closet or be worn on their own. and their cotton and linen/cotton fabrics mean you have year-round wear-ability no matter where you live or visit!
dearies, i have an easy bit of homework for you this october: every time you get dressed, are out shopping, or just flipping through a mail order catalog, read the product labels and take note where the item was made. you'll be surprised to see just how many things we wear and use on a regular basis are imported from other countries. and remember, those "bargain" or marked down purchases are still making sellers money because they cost hardly anything to make, allowing for big mark-ups and profits even with import fees and taxes added on.
thank you again for your continued support of darling dearie and of the slow-fashion movement. i look forward to celebrating well-made, quality clothing, designed to last and endure. let's continue to embrace and champion sustainability, quality-over-quantity, minimal-to-zero waste construction and individuality!
until my next missive...
xoxo
darling
