fabric swatch card samples & anatomy of a french seam

october 2017

hello dearies,

necessity is the mother of invention, so the saying goes. not having a traditional brick and mortar boutique proves challenging when one cannot simply visit to touch or try the garments being offered.

"it's tricky, especially for something like clothing, to differentiate quality, especially from a photo. you really need to feel the weight of the fabric to appreciate its quality," a thoughtful dearie (and owner of a super mash-up dress) shared recently.

the comment has inspired me to offer up sample fabric swatches of the beautiful textiles used in my one-of-a-kind garments! you will now be able to see the true colors and feel the weight and texture of the frock or flag pants that you've had your eye on and these swatches can be delivered straight to your letter box (remember those?). click here to order your sample swatch today - postage is included if you reside in north america or the uk. please consider sharing this info with your own personal network!

you don't need to know your way around a sewing machine in order to appreciate the craftsmanship of an exceptional garment. there are endless beautiful methods for finishing a garment seam but my personal preference, when it comes to exposed seams, is to champion the refined beauty of the french seam. it's not difficult to execute but it does require a little more time and attention to detail, unlike many of the highly efficient (and unimaginative) seam treatments "fast fashion" favors.

view "anatomy of a french seam" to learn more about this method for sewing that begins counter-intuitively with the wrong sides of the fabric together.

here is a close-up of the seams inside the same completed poppy super mash-up dress. french seams provide garments with a clean, finished and professional appearance but with a certain *je ne sais quoi* that is completely worth it!

dearies, your feedback is always welcome, but you are even more welcome. why not simply say hello? let me know what's on your mind and how you will be spending your halloween. speaking of which, lest you think i'm the only creative spirit in our household, see how mr. dearie tranforms our abode every halloween. it's his favorite holiday...

until my next missive,

xoxo

darling

p.s.- if you haven't visited my etsy annex, you should. it's filled with lovely reprise re-fashioned frocks. just between us, these unique dresses are now offered at a steal!
