pinterest boards, snippet rolls and llc's
dearies,
i'm not sure where you hail from but spring is definitely in the air down here in the sonoran desert!
our home renovations are nearing completion and my ad-hoc title of chief general contractor for our abode is finally drawing to a close. as my time is freeing up from having to shadow sub-contractors, i've relished being able to re-direct that time and energy back into creative endeavors once again. specifically, revisiting my many boards on pinterest and remembering why i wanted to save all the pins i have in the first place! in doing so, i've given myself agency to try new recipes literally pinned for many years (some have been successful, some...well, it's always fun to experiment and try something new) as well as exploring, testing and indulging in new crafty projects. one which is creating snippet rolls.
you may have never heard of a snippet roll but if you sew or perhaps do scrap journals, you may already be familiar with this item. (i've also seen them called "fabric rolls" and "memory rolls.") snippet rolls are about taking little bits and bobs of fabrics, scraps of lace, beads, buttons, sequins, you name it, and stitching it together into strips to use for embellishment in various ways, or even just wrapped around vintage wooden thread holders, purely for decoration.
some snippet rolls are fashioned using tiny bits of fabric and lace scraps, others are stitched on larger pieces of fabric which are then cut into uniform strips.
most versions are embellished with buttons, paper, ribbon, beads, embroidery and "fussy cuts." fussy cuts, as the brits oft refer to it as, specifically target fabric details cut out like animals, flowers, words or shapes.
i've even seen etsy sellers who stitch silk strips adorned with tiny snips of fabric and lace to cardstock, in which the snippet strip can be pulled away from the paper backing and used for scrapbook making.
really, there is not right or wrong way to make a snippet roll and once you've tried your hand at it, they are addictively fun to create and are the perfect activity whether you are a beginner or advanced in your sewing skills!
i have made several snippet rolls so far and have found my natural preference is to have larger chopped fabric scraps layered with smaller bits at various angles, then i embellish the strips with snips of various ribbon, lace, sequins and vintage buttons using glittery embroidery floss, afterwards.
i do love the look of the tinier snippets of fabric and their delicate and frilly appearance, but forcing myself to recreate at this scale is proving futile at present!
now that the dearie family is settling into the familiar hum of household routine, i've begun the transition of moving business registration from oregon to arizona, choosing to re-establishing darling dearie as an llc instead of a sole-prop. new friendships and alliances have brought about previously enjoyed yet unconsidered opportunities, including expanding into creative design services utilizing pinterest and other marketing & branding ventures. i look forward to sharing more in future missives as things progress.
even though i have yet to refresh and restyle product photos within my shop, my available frocks and oddments are still as timeless now as they were when i first created them, some, nearly six years ago. i hope you you will agree that good design and quality craftmanship can stand the test of time and see the benefits to adding slow-fashioned, flattering and timeless clothing to your current wardrobe, or as a gift for someone special in your life.
until my next missive...
xoxo
